THE NATURE OF PRO-LIFE ISSUES
1. Direct threats to human life include first of all abortion, which takes the lives of well over a million US children annually; embryonic stem cell harvesting; euthanasia; and cloning. Additional threats to human life include poverty, capital punishment, racism, war, nuclear arms proliferation and exploitation. Since each and every human being is unique and important, one's personhood or worth should not be arbitrarily determined by another's choice. No one exists solely as a means to someone else's happiness. The choices we make, as individuals and as a society, must be weighed in light of their impact on human life and dignity. Do you acknowledge both the breadth of pro life issues, and the primacy of some of those issues, namely abortion, embryonic stem cell harvesting, euthanasia, and cloning?

ABORTION
2. Do you believe that a unique human life begins at conception?
 YES


3. The 14th Amendment states "nor shall any state deprive any person of life, liberty or property without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws." The Supreme Court in Roe v. Wade, 1973, stated that "if this suggestion of personhood is established, the appellant's case, of course, collapses, for the fetus' right to life would then be guaranteed specifically by the [14th] Amendment." The Court regrettably concluded though that "we need not resolve the difficult question of when life begins. When those trained in the respective disciplines of medicine, philosophy, and theology are unable to arrive at any consensus, the judiciary, at this point in the development of man's knowledge, is not in a position to speculate as to the answer." 
Do you believe that the State has a compelling interest in protecting human life beginning at conception?
YES – The Declaration of Independence declares these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights that among these are Life…  It goes on to say that the purpose for government is to secure those rights.  Nothing could be more fundamental.  


4. Is taking the life of a pre-born child through abortion ever morally permissible? Check all that apply:

I know of no situation where the mother would have to die in order to save the life of the baby.  Since the baby’s life depends on the life of the mother, the mother’s life would need to be protected.  No one has the right to stop an innocent human heart.  If there is ever an exceptional situation where the mother would die if she were to continue her pregnancy, the first responsibility is to try to save both lives (mother and baby).  If an exceptional situation could be imagined where only the life of the mother or the life of the baby could be saved, then those charged with that responsibility on the scene would have to make that call. 

 

EMBRYONIC STEM CELLS AND CLONING
5. Do you oppose embryonic stem cell research or human cloning, whether publically or privately funded? 
Yes.  There are abundant sources of stem cells without resorting to the Nazi-like practice of using body parts harvested from innocent people whose lives were wrongfully taken.

 

PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT IN ABORTION
6. Peer reviewed studies have shown that parental involvement laws reduce the occurrence of risky sex in teens, and more than 30 states currently have some form of them. Either the teen refrains from engaging in sex or is more careful before having sex. These laws help teen mothers and fathers get the support and guidance they need from parents in this important decision. Not having them risks parental estrangement or alienation from the child when in the greatest need and denies the dignity of the family. Minors already must have parental approval for even the most minor types of medical procedures or medications and should also for the complex procedure of abortion. Without parental involvement, a minor impregnated by an adult often times is pressured into having an abortion so as to conceal the fact that the adult is guilty of statutory rape. Do you support parental involvement laws (with judicial override) for minors when seeking an abortion? Yes. In a world where school staff is forbidden to give an aspiring without the parent’s permission, it is ludicrous to presume that major surgery can be performed on a child without the parent’s authorization.

 

PHYSICIAN ASSISTED SUICIDE
7. Washington State Initiative 1000 which was passed in 2008, legalized Physician Assisted Suicide (PAS) by allowing doctors to prescribe lethal doses of barbiturates to certain patients. One objection to this sanctioning of suicide is that some vulnerable persons, such as those who are feeble, depressed, mentally ill, or handicapped, will likely experience coercion to end their lives. For them a right to die, already protected in the Natural Death Act, (RCW 70.122), may become a duty to die. The American Medical Association (policy H-140.952) as well as the Washington State Medical Association (2007 Resolution A-7) oppose PAS. The AMA states that "physician assisted suicide is fundamentally inconsistent with the physician's professional role." The initiative uses vague language that enable doctors "acting in good faith" to assist mentally ill or depressed patients to commit suicide, while protecting doctors from civil and criminal lawsuits. Health care insurers can cut costs by providing prescriptions for suicide. Will society's sanction of suicide have unintended consequences? Sponsor and former governor Booth Gardner says that this is only a “first step” in legalizing assisted suicide for anyone who wants it. When society fails to protect vulnerable people in their troubles, but instead offers them the violence of suicide, has not society abandoned them? Do you oppose the availability of physician assisted suicide? Yes.  No one has the right to terminate an innocent life.  Killing is not compassion.  Rather, compassion will minister to relieve the pain, comfort and care for the most ill among us.

 

MARRIAGE PRESERVATION
8. Children develop best within the context of a biologically related family. This is a scientifically proven fact which theWashington State Supreme Court referenced when in 2006, it ruled on the state's 1998 Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA). The court determined that the state's limitation of marriage to heterosexual couples "is constitutional because the legislature was entitled to believe that limiting marriage to opposite-sex couples furthers ... the well-being of children by encouraging families where children are reared in homes headed by the children’s biological parents." In concurrence, Justice James Johnson wrote "The unique and binary biological nature of marriage and its exclusive link with procreation and responsible child rearing has defined the institution [of marriage in law]." In order to affirm and protect children’s rights and the primacy of those rights over adults’ aspirations for novel family forms, do you oppose laws that change the definition of marriage to include homosexual and polygamous relationships? 
Yes. The foundation for civilization is the family as it has been defined from the beginning of recorded time.  People are free to have any relationships they want and to practice whatever sexual behavior in private.  Same sex marriage is not legal for the same reasons that polygamous marriages are not.  They undermine, corrupt and are incompatible with civilization.

 

MEDICAL CONSCIENCE CLAUSES
9. "The trend toward accepting the termination of some human lives as a normal part of medicine is accelerating ... Courts, policymakers, media leaders - even the elites of organized medicine - increasingly assert that patient rights and respect for patients’ choices should trump the consciences of medical professionals. Indeed, the time may soon arrive when doctors, nurses, and pharmacists will be compelled to take, or be complicit in the taking of, human life, regardless of their strong religious or moral objections thereto." (Westlie J. Smith, 2009).Should doctors, nurses, pharmacists and other medical professionals be granted the right to refuse participation in the provision of medical services that violate the person's moral, ethical or religious beliefs? Yes. Our freedom of conscience is one of the most fundamental rights that we have.  No one has the authority to command us to be an accomplice to an act that in our own conscience is a crime.

 

 

10. PUBLIC LIBRARY PORNOGRAPHY
In the US Supreme Court ruling United States v. American Library Association, Inc, 2003, which upheld the use of library internet pornography filters, Chief Justice Rehnquist stated for the plurality that "to fulfill their traditional missions, public libraries must have broad discretion to decide what material to provide to their patrons.  Although they seek to provide a wide array of information, their goal has never been to provide 'universal coverage,'" and "most libraries already exclude pornography from their print collections because they deem it inappropriate for inclusion."   
Will you as a commissioner appoint and confirm only library board candidates who oppose the inclusion of pornography in public libraries, whether by internet or print materials?
Yes.  I support the Supreme Court’s position and agree that public libraries exclude pornography because they deem it to be inappropriate for inclusion.
 

11. REGULATION OF SEXUALLY ORIENTED BUSINESSES 
The U.S. Supreme Court in Young v. American Mini Theaters, Inc., (1976) and Renton v. Playtime Theater, Inc., (1986), concluded that municipalities have "substantial governmental interests" in protecting and preserving the quality of life for its community against the adverse secondary effects of sexually oriented businesses while allowing for "reasonable alternative avenues of communication."  Land Use Studies from cities around the United States were cited in both U.S. Supreme Court cases documenting the harmful secondary effects including 1. Increased Crime - rape, sexual assault, prostitution and illegal drug sales; 2. Decreased Property Values - both residential and commercial; and 3. Urban Blight - people and businesses fleeing the community. 
Will you support municipalities that diligently seek and maintain zoning ordinances, licensing procedures, permit requirements and operational regulations which serve to minimize the adverse secondary effects of Sexually Oriented Businesses? 
Yes.  Within the limits of the law, I will seek to support land use regulations that protect and preserve the quality of life for our community against the adverse secondary effects of sexually oriented businesses.11.

 

 

PUBLIC SCHOOL SEX EDUCATION
12. The typical comprehensive sex education program spends as little as 5% of the time teaching abstinence principles (Zogby 3/27/07), instead spending significantly more time teaching students how to put condoms on models of male genitalia and promoting alternative forms of sexual activity called outercourse, which may include showering together and mutual masturbation as effective ways to avoid pregnancy and disease. In contrast, an emphasis on abstinence means teaching students about building healthy relationships and bolstering self worth and self-control. Do you support only sex education that is wholesome, not dehumanizing and truly safe? Yes.  To do otherwise would be like giving kids driver’s licenses without teaching them the laws of the roads so they understand their personal responsibility to obey those laws in order to protect their lives and the lives of others. 

 

DEATH PENALTY
13. The death penalty in the United States should:
I support capital punishment for heinous crimes where the convicted offender obviously willfully took the life of another innocent person.  The same Ten Commandments found in the Bible that includes “Thou shalt not murder” (Thou shalt not take an innocent life), also appropriates the death penalty for those that do take innocent life.

 

GAMING
14. A proposed casino off I-5 near Ridgefield is projected to be one of the largest in the nation. What is your position on the building of this casino? 
Most states in America have laws that forbid casinos, and for good reasons.  I side with those states for the same reasons and therefore oppose building casinos in our state.

 

QUALIFICATIONS AND COMMENTS
15. Please state your qualifications for office such as professional, educational, family and community accomplishments. You may also add any any further comments regarding the relationship of your candidacy to respect life issues.

I believe that we are entrusted with the responsibility to participate in our representative government.  A long proven track record of servant leadership, good stewardship and character that bears good fruit, are indispensable qualifications for anyone to be entrusted with much power and authority. I am the founder, owner and CEO of a design and manufacturing company that has grown for 33 years to employ 122 people today.  US Digital is completely debt free, healthy, growing, prospering and thriving even in this economy. We have fun and actually enjoy designing, manufacturing and selling practical precision sensor products for factory automation, robotics and the solar power fields.  We build everything in a state-of-the-art facility here in Vancouver, and export about a third of our products to overseas customers.  I still serve as an inventor, problem solver, CEO and love working here with an outstanding team of people.

 

We apply practical problem solving principles (that we also see are consistent with the Bible) to focus on making others successful.  About 4 years ago, we prepared about 17,000 square feet of office space to accommodate Christ centered ministries in our building after realizing that businesses can serve a channel of God’s providence to ministries. About a year ago, we expanded that space to 25,000 square feet which now serves as a home for 35 ministries at no cost to them.  We provide all their IT needs, utilities, receptionist, copier supplies, meeting rooms, Etc.  They are able to minister more effectively and network together without the cost of such overhead.

 

I was not involved in politics all these years, but focused on our family, business and relationships. About 3 years ago, the dysfunction of our local government became so obvious that it even got my attention.  I began studying and investigating the state of our community and discovered a real need for new servant leadership.  We needed selfless people with integrity, sound principles and relevant business experience who were able and willing to serve others to restore healthy local government. 

 

I became involved as a citizen advocate and helped elect some very good people to office.  Over the past year, my wife and I (married 35 years with 3 grown Christ-following loving daughters) have discussed and prayed about the right person to run for county commissioner.  The fellow who is currently serving in our district used to be good, but has changed over the past 8 years.

 

While our business prospers and thrives, I have watched our community continue to decline. The leadership deficit has resulted in high unemployment, closed businesses, homes lost to foreclosures, excessive taxes, bloating the size and cost of bureaucracies, and wasteful boondoggles that continue while ignoring or disenfranchising citizens.  Many people have become cynical and lost their trust in government officials who seem to be motivated by a “What’s in it for me?” attitude. 

It does not need to be this way.  We can do so much better.  New leadership can turn this around.  I have diligently searched for qualified candidates, willing to serve and able to win.  Long story short, I ended up being one of those candidates.  I found that my desire to serve others and work to provide practical solutions at the county level has compelled me to be one of those willing to serve so our community can get back on the right track to prosperity.

US Digital has a very capable leadership team that allows me the freedom to serve full time as a commissioner.  I am a life-long learner and have been a problem solver and inventor since I was a child.  I’ve always enjoyed inventing and discovering creative solutions that make our world a better place. 

 

My history includes becoming a licensed Advanced Class Radio Amateur (WA6HXJ) designing and building my own equipment at age 16, working in electronics at age 18, and serving in the US Navy as a nuclear trained electrician’s mate at age 20.  After the Navy, I worked as an FCC licensed Commercial Broadcasting technician that designed and built custom equipment for a Southern California Christian TV station.  After getting married, I worked as a senior electronic engineer designing medical ultrasound imaging equipment, then designed hard disk controller storage systems for personal computers, and then started US Digital in 1979 designing precision sensors for Robotics and Motion Control.

Over the past 33 years, US Digital has grown into one of the healthiest, largest, and debt-free businesses in Vancouver.  Our local business paper, the Vancouver Business Journal is honoring US Digital as a finalist in their 10+ year category of fastest growing local companies.  It pays to empower others for success to maximize their potential.  This valuable experience convinces me that our community can also prosper and thrive.  We can accomplish great things when we work together for the good of others and don’t mind who gets the credit. 

 

The same values and principles that grow strong healthy businesses, also apply to prosper our homes and governments. Everybody wins when we focus on great customer service, well thought out priorities, and apply principles that are resourceful, efficient, practical and realistic based on sound judgment.

 

Welcoming the participation of citizens in the process is one of the smartest things we can do to arrive at the most balanced, informed, practical, appropriate and efficient solutions for our community.  Campaigning has been quite enjoyable, especially with the encouragement of an awesome leadership team working together for the success of this campaign.  I believe that our community can be a much better place with new servant leadership.  Hopefully, our community will agree and vote to elect such new people.
